Makeup Tutorial – Makeup Application

This makeup tutorial will show you the basics of makeup application for any use.  Starting out with the order of application followed by the standard techniques used for makeup application.  This method of applying makeup can be used every time and simply adapted to or added to depending on the look required.

Note, the face should be properly cleansed prior to any work and a good quality moisturizer should be applied at least ten minutes beforehand.

Makeup Tutorial Part 1 – Order of Work

Color correction (optional) similar to a moisturizer in texture but has two shades purple (for sallow skin) and green (tones down redness)

Concealer is applied after color correction and is used to cover under eye shadows, blemishes and any other problem areas. Concealer is usually yellow toned.

Foundation is applied next which helps to even skin tone and color.

Blusher is applied to the cheeks after the base foundation has been applied and set for a few minutes.

Powder is applied after blusher to help set the makeup and works as a base for the final makeup.

Eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara

Lip pencil, lipstick and lip-gloss.

Makeup Tutorial Part 2 – Application

Correctors and concealers for shadows under the eyes.  Use a shade of concealer that is lighter than your foundation and begin application at the inner corner of the eye, use a generous amount to cover the entire area of shadow all the way to the lower eyelash.  Blend lightly with a clean finger.

Foundation – ideally use your own blend of foundation, otherwise test the foundation on the cheek area.  A suitable shade/tone will almost disappear into the skin.  Using an applicator sponge apply foundation to the sides of the nose and use the sponge to blend outwards toward the hairline.  For the forehead, start by applying a small amount to the center of the forehead just above the eyebrow line. Blend outwards to the hairline.

Blusher, if blusher is to be applied at this stage you should choose a cream blush. Using a sponge or foundation brush, apply a small amount of cream blush to the highest part of the cheekbone area and blend well.
Powder can now be applied using a large brush or powder puff, lightly dust the powder over the face paying particular attention to any areas where you have applied concealer.

Eye shadow and eyeliner, depending on the look you require you can apply the eyeliner before or after the eyeshadow.  For a basic eye shadow application you should use a light color that covers all the way from the eyelashes to the brow bone. You can then add your choice of color to the eyelid only, once this is done you can add a little definition by adding a third (usually darker) shadow to the outer corner of the eye.  To finish the look use a blender brush to blend the shadow on the lid and along the crease of the eye.

Eyeliner should be applied to the outer part of the eyes, not the inside rim.  Using a pencil or liquid liner, draw a line all the way from the inside of the eye to the outside keeping as close to the lashes as possible.  It is not necessary to add eyeliner under the eye although many women choose to.  If you do want to apply eyeliner to this area simply do the same as you would for the top eyelid.  Depending on the look you want you can leave a clear line or for a smoky eye look use your finger to gently blend the eyeliner.

Mascara should be applied using a wand that has been cleaned of excess mascara.  Using the wand as close to the base of the lashes as possible and move outwards taking care to separate the lashes to avoid clumping.  Wait until the top is dry before applying mascara to the bottom lashes.

Lip pencil should be applied before lipstick or lip gloss.  Start by drawing a line along the outer area of the lips, you can also use your lip liner to fill in the entire lip area giving a great base for your lipstick and helping it to last longer and be less likely to smudge.
Apply lipstick with a lip brush, stroking from the center outwards to the corners keeping within the lip lines.  Press lips together to blend.  Gloss can now be applied; again a lip brush is best for this.  Lip-gloss is applied the same way as lipstick.

This makeup tutorial can be used as a reference for any makeup application,  you can experiment with colors, shades and techniques on the eyes and lips for a more dramatic or smoky look as required.
