How To Apply Makeup | Makeup Tips and Advice

There are many differing thoughts on how to apply makeup and while the style of  makeup application can vary depending on the need of the user, there are some basics that should always be adhered to.  There is a vast difference between the different styles of makeup and it is a somewhat personal preference as to which way you choose to apply your makeup.

The application of makeup for one person alone can vary on a day to day basis and factors such as the wearers mood can determine the style they choose, of course there are other factors such as where the user is going and what the purpose is, for example everyday makeup suitable for a quick shopping trip or to the office or other place of employment will differ a great amount to evening wear makeup.  Daytime makeup will most times be a lighter application overall and has a much more subtle effect whereas night time makeup application can vary from a natural look makeup application to very artistic or exotic style depending on the event or situation.  Special occasion makeup is almost a style on its own and many women choose to get a professional consultation or application for such events.

Although the styles of application vary from person to person the basics methods of how to apply makeup very rarely change. Below you will find out what you need to apply makeup for any occasion as well as some handy makeup tips that will help you to achieve the perfect finish every time.

How To Apply Makeup | Step By Step Advice

What you will need:

  • A good quality moisturizing cream or lotion
  • Concealer
  • Foundation
  • Blusher
  • Powder
  • Eyeliner
  • Mascara
  • Lip gloss
  • Eye Shadow in a range of colors and tones

The above are all you need to create a variety of different looks for almost any occasion.  Below is a step by step guide on how to apply makeup for everyday wear:

Makeup Application Step 1:

Ensuring you have properly cleansed your skin prior to makeup application is a vital step and once you have done so your very first step should be to apply your moisturizer.  Be generous with your moisturizer at this stage and apply at least 15 minutes before you start to apply anything else to your skin.

Makeup Application Step 2:

Foundation and concealer, depending on the condition of your skin you may need to apply more or less concealer than in this step.  The concealer you choose should be one tone lighter than your foundation makeup and should be used on any problematic areas of skin that you want to conceal, it is commonly applied below the eyes to reduce under eye shadows and areas of redness as well as blemishes.  Concealer should be well blended in using your finger (ensure your hands are clean before any application) and should be left for a minute after application.

When it comes to foundation makeup application you can use more or less depending on the occasion, less for daytime is fine and if you have a normal skin type you may even choose to use your regular foundation mixed with a little of your moisturizer to give a subtle glow rather than full coverage.  Foundation is best applied using clean fingers and by dabbing a little foundation on the t-zone and and cheekbones and blending outwards towards the neckline.  This helps to avoid developing a line along the jaw and gives a natural looking finish.

Makeup Application Step 3:

Powder and blusher, powder is used to help seal in your foundation and increase the length of time it will last.  You can choose to apply your blusher either before or after your finishing powder depending on the effect you require.  Try experimenting with both methods to find out which works best for you.  Blusher should be applied lightly with a blusher brush and swept from the highest point of the cheekbone outwards.  Don’t overdo your blusher as it may not always be obvious how much you have applied, start with a light dusting and add to it if necessary.

Your powder should be applied using the correct makeup brush and using light strokes outwards towards the jaw line.  You do not need to apply a lot of powder, just enough to take the shine off your foundation.

Makeup Application Step 4:

Eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara.  The next step for your makeup application really comes down to your personal preferences, depending on your coloring and your choice of clothes you can decide on the shades and tones to use for your eyes.  Generally for daytime wear neutral colors or natural earth tones are best.  Using three shades of the color that you choose works best.  Taking the lightest shade, apply with an eye shadow brush to the entire lower lid and blend outwards and up to the brow line.  The medium shade should be applied to the entire lower eye lid and the third and darkest shade if you choose to use it should be applied to the outer corner of the lower lid and should be well blended inwards towards the inner part of the eye.

Some people choose to apply their eyeliner before their eye shadow but again this really depends on personal choice, I would do this if i wanted a more subtle look so it may be most suited to daytime application again.  In either case eyeliner, liquid or pencil should be applied with a steady hand and a fine line should be drawn from the outer part of the eye inwards, bring the line all the way to the inner part of the eye for a better look and when applying eyeliner to the bottom of the eye take into account that this can make the eye appear smaller.

A good quality mascara is always a good investment and as mascara lasts for a long time it only really needs to be replaced once a year.  Most mascaras nowadays are excellent at reducing problems such as lashes clumping together.  Applying mascara is of course optional but can dramatically improve and lengthen the appearance of short eyelashes.  Application is simple as long as you keep a steady hand and remember to apply the mascara to the full of the lashes and not just the tips.

Makeup Application Step 5:

The final step for everyday makeup application is the lips, in most cases you can simply use a lip gloss or a tinted lip-gloss for daytime wear, if you prefer to wear a lipstick then choose one  that compliments your choice of eye shadow, for daywear keep lipstick subtle.
